Live With A Purpose

Ellie is a curious 19-year-old girl who wants to commit suicide when the fireworks explode for New Year’s Eve. She stands on the ledge of a rooftop, ready for her funeral in a black dress, waiting for the countdown to begin. Despite the circumstances, Ellie is determined and at peace with this decision. Having seen what tragic experiences her older role models have been through in adulthood, she is terrified of the future and wants to end her life on a good note before her life gets worse.

She is approached by a stranger named Esau, a depressed older man who came to the rooftop to commit suicide as well. He sees Ellie and finds purpose in himself in trying to convince Ellie not to jump, convincing himself as well. As he narrates her hypothetical future life, she develops a desire and curiosity for her future, so she listens to Esau’s narrations. Trying to find a choice to commit to and angered by the interruption of her plans, Ellie argues with Esau about the reason to live, and further implores that he either jump or leave her alone.

Esau finally gives up hope when the countdown begins and gets on the ledge next to Ellie. Suddenly, both characters are fighting for their lives in a conversation. In the end, Esau commits to a selfless act of comforting Ellie by joining her in suicide, and Ellie must commit to a selfless act of saving Esau and herself.
